Hi Christy! I do My Fitness Pal to track my calories and it is the single most helpful thing I have done to lose weight. I wrote a post about it if you interested.

I agree, doing it with pen and paper is too time-consuming and a recipe for failure, but MFP makes it so easy. If you sign-up (it's free), be sure to "friend" me on there. My user id is: hsmamato4

Thanks for commenting-I can use all the cheerleaders I can get!

This is exactly how I feel about diets- that your "diet" should be a way of life and not a 6-8 week program. The only diet I ever felt comfortable doing was the Fat Flush Plan, but again it was more just a lifestyle change (you eat fruits, veggies, and lean protein for a certain number of weeks and then add back in wheat, milk, and sugar slowly to watch for food allergies/sensitivities).

We eat very well (lots of veggies, fruits, and whole grains) but now I am working with the hubby on not eating too much. Even when you are eating good quality food, you still need to watch how much. We have tried the calorie counting- do you have any suggestions for that? We did it for about 2 weeks but it seemed to be very time consuming. Any tips for eating less would be great! My body recognizes when it is full, but he really struggles with that.

Another interesting note is that all growing up I was the chubby kid in my family. I am grateful now because I have had to work hard to find how to keep myself thin. I see a lot of my family members gaining weight now, as their metabolisms slow down, but I feel confident I have the tools to keep myself lean and healthy for the rest of my life.

Good luck to you! Consider me your newest cheerleader. :-)

Thanks Heather. That is so awesome about your and your husband's weigh-loss. Congratulations! And I totally understand where you are coming from with the other family members-most of our family members think we are a little nuts. But they are used to it since I have never been one to follow convention.

I noticed something else this week. I traveled to my parents home so I had little control over what was served/what I ate for a couple of days. And after eating processed foods that would never normally make their way into my own home, my skin has totally broken out! Healthier skin is just one of a multitude of benefits we have experienced since transitioning to a clean diet.

I just had to say I love your post and I agree and have been doing the same for almost two years now. I've been overweight most my life and been there, tried that, every "diet" under the sun. Sure I would loose weight on them but I would feel crummy or have zero energy. One day I just kind of snapped, got rid off all the diet foods and processed foods and now I'm proud to say we make 98% of everything from scratch (what we don't is made from real food), and we spend less money doing it. My husband lost about 35lbs and I lost 56lbs (and still going) and our children have not had an illness since our switch.
Sadly even our sustained success isn't enough to get the rest of our families to change their ways.

So happy to have found your blog & best of luck to you!
